The University of Ibadan (UI) Sports Council, has scheduled Feb. 18 to Feb. 20 to host this year’s Oyo State All Tertiary Institutions Tracks and Field Championships.
It will also host the second Olubadan-UI Road Race, the institution’s Director of Sports, Dr Kunle Odewunmi, said on Saturday in Ibadan.
Odewunmi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the track and field tournament would hold between Feb. 18 and Feb. 19.
“The track and field event will herald the race.
“The Olubadan-UI Road Race is open. So we specifically fixed the dates for the two tournaments to follow each other for students from other institutions to participate,” he said.
The director said that registration was still going on for the institutions.
Odewunmi said that the race was to honour the royal father of the land on whose territory the institutions were established.
“It is an event to provide interactions between the academia and the people of Ibadan,” he said.
According to him, the race will cover more areas of the ancient city.
He said that it would start at Olubadan Palace, Monatan through Iwo Road, Agodi Gate, Oritamefa, Mokola Roundabout, Sango and end at UI’s new stadium.
Abideen Yekeen of the Department of History and Cynthia Momah of the Department of Agriculture are the men and women’s defending champions of the race.
He said that sponsors of the race include the Olubadan himself, Oba Samuel Odugade, UI Sports Council, corporate bodies and philanthropists.
He noted that cash and prizes would be won by participants.
