The winner of the primary
election to the Oyo Central Senatorial district, Jumoke Akinjide, has given conditions
for taking part in the rerun election ordered by the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) at the weekend.

The PDP’s National Working
Committee, on Saturday, ordered the cancellation of the governorship primary elections
held in Kogi and Kano States, as well as the senatorial primaries of Delta
Central, Oyo Central, Sokoto East, Bauchi North and Taraba Central, Adamawa South,
Adamawa North, Kogi Central, Kogi East and Kogi West senatorial districts.

Mrs Akinjide, in a letter dated
January 24, and forwarded to the party headquarters in Abuja, alleged that the
leadership was cancelling that of her district, Oyo Central, to pave way for Teslim
Folarin, the current senator who was in prison for the alleged murder of a
transport union leader when the election was held on January 11.

The daughter of Richard Akinjide,
former Attorney-General of the Federation and minister of justice, said she is
not ready to contest the election with Mr Folarin unless proofs on why the Senate leader deserves the ears
of the NWC over the election are provided.

“As far as I know, there
can be absolutely no legitimacy to Teslim Folarin’s purported claim that he was
a senatorial aspirant who now wishes to compete in a primary election. He must prove
that he purchased and submitted the appropriate PDP nomination forms for the
office of Senator supported by 30 party nominees before the PDP’s set deadline.
Unless such proof is given publicly to Oyo State PDP and all other interested
parties, I am not willing to take part in a head-to-head primary election
against Mr Folarin as proposed.

“Any rerun of the primary must
be conducted in a free and fair manner and in full public glare. In addition, INEC
officials must be present to observe any rerun of the primary.”

“Mr Folarin did not, as far
as I am aware, purchase and submit any nomination forms sponsored by 30 party
members required under PDP party law for any legitimate candidacy for the
Senatorial office.” She added.

The party has fixed Wednesday,
January 26 for rerun of the primary in the state.
