A mild drama ensued
yesterday at the Ondo State House of Assembly as the impeached speaker
and his deputy, Taofik Abdulsalam and Mayowa Akinfolarin, met an empty
parliamentary session when they resumed.
The duo were sacked
on April 8, 2010 and subsequently suspended for keeping assembly
properties in their custody. The two lawmakers did not receive salary
and emoluments throughout the period they were on suspension. Moreover,
their constituencies were not represented on any of the decisions taken
on the floor of the Assembly.
The duo later sought legal redress at the law court but the court did not rule in their favour.
However, series of
announcements were made in the state-owned radio and television stations
that the impeached officers should appear before the parliamentary
session yesterday.
The duo, however, received a great shock as none of the principal officers was around to attend to them.
The legislators, who
arrived around 12pm as directed by the announcement, went to the
offices allocated to them and met the civil servants in there.
After waiting for several hours without seeing any of the officers
except the parliamentary secretary, the lawmakers decided to leave the
premises of the Assembly in company of their aides.
