Medical doctors in
public hospitals and health institutions in Kano State have threatened
to go on strike on February 14 to protest the non-implementation of the
Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) by government.
The chairperson of
the state’s branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Daiyabu
Ibrahim, announced on Tuesday in Kano that the union would meet on
Tuesday to fashion strategies for the industrial action. He said the
21-day ultimatum given to government would expire on Thursday, warning
that “if government does not grant our request of 100 percent
implementation of CONMESS, we will surely act”. Mr. Ibrahim said the
union had met twice with representatives of the government over the
issues, but that the authority offered only an additional 5 percent of
the structure on top of the 65 percent it promised earlier.
“We are asking for
100 percent implementation of CONMESS; anything short of this is
unacceptable to us,” he stated. Mr. Ibrahim urged the federal and state
governments to address the shortage of medical equipment in the country
to boost health care delivery to the people.
“We need
state-of-the-art medical equipment in all our hospitals and clinics in
the country to enable us to diagnose diseases and treat them more
efficiently and effectively. If such facilities are provided, the
nation will be saving huge sums of money spent on foreign medical trips
by Nigerians,” he said.
