New media is definitely the future. Or how else does one explain the series of on-line premiers on artistes’ self-hosted or label owned websites?
This week has been very eventful with the release of highly anticipated videos from major frontliners in the Nigerian music industry. Hardly had we soaked in Lynxxx’s Alabukun video featuring Banky W which dropped over last weekend, when by Wednesday, three amazing videos dropped, all from our favourite artistes.
The most anticipated of the bulk was perhaps D’banj’s much touted Endowed Remix ft American rapper, Snoop Dog. Many had heard about the collaboration but refused to believe it because it wouldn’t be a first time that rumoured foreign collaborations have passed out false.
On Tuesday evening, the official Endowed Remix video premiered on www.mohitsrecords.com. True to their words, it featured Snoop Dog, Wande Coal, K-Switch, label president Don Jazzy and of course D’banj.
Shot in the States by Mo hits’ favourite director, Sesan, the video showed off Uncle Snoop and Nephew Dbanj in an exotic mansion with barely dressed curvaceous girls. Apart from the endless stream of commendations pouring in on the marriage between both cultures, and the make-sense remix, questions bothering on the portrayal of women in videos will remain a topic. Before the end of the first 24hours of release, close to 60, 000 people had watched the video on youtube.
Next up is P-Square’s South African shot new release, titled Possibility. The track taken off their fourth album is arguably fan’s favourite courtesy of the iconic 2Face’s appearance. The black and white video is a reserved one that celebrates the African beauty showing off beautiful everyday African girls, children and mother all decently dressed in African fabric. It was shot by manager and brother, Engees.
Tuesday rounded up with a world premiere of Naeto C’s Ten over Ten video on the emcee’s website – www.naetoc,com. Following up on Naeto’s Monday album release, director Bobby Boulders sneaked in footage from the rapper’s November graduation at the University of Dundee where he bagged a M Sc. The video competed for attention alongside Endowed remix and Possibility.
By Wednesday, singer Timi Dakolo further spiced up the video front with the release of his Let it shine video.
