A pressure group,
Advocate for Social Justice yesterday warned the Academic Staff Union
of Universities (ASUU) over its call on the Chief Justice of Nigeria
(CJN), Aloysius Katsina-Alu to resign from his position.

Mr Katsina-Alu was
asked to do so over the controversy surrounding the elevation of the
President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Isa Salami to the Supreme
Court.

The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Felix Imuesin warned ASUU not to dabble into the issue as it was beyond it.

ASUU had on Monday called for the resignation of Mr Katsina-Alu or face mass protest from its members.

The National
President of the union, Ukachukwu Awuzie, who made the call, said Mr
Katsina-Alu’s resignation would pave the way for further investigation
of the allegations which Justice Salami levelled against him in the
heat of the controversy.

Mr Imuesin alleged
that ASUU’s comment on the issue is politically motivated, even as he
noted that the union has more issues bedevilling it, especially the
education sector which is almost in a comatose state.

He said that rather
than dabbling into a judicial matter which is beyond its jurisdiction,
ASUU should face its internal problems.

Mr Imuesin noted
that the crisis between the CJN and Mr Salami has been resolved
amicably by the National Judicial Council (NJC), which has power over
all the judicial officers in the country.

He warned against politicising the judiciary, which he said will not be in the interest of democracy.
