Ondo State Police Command yesterday confirmed the release of
Iju-Osun community monarch, Samuel Oyegbemi, who was kidnapped by some
suspected ex-militants.

His freedom came two days after he was abducted by some youth
suspected to be militants. The state Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO],
Mr. Aremu Adeniran, said the monarch, Oba Oyegbemi, was in stable condition. He
said a combined team of the riot and regular police officers, deplored in the
area, secured the release of the monarch on Saturday evening.

The police spokesman said the monarch was in high spirits and
was not rough-handled by the Ijaw youth who abducted him after setting his
palace and other houses ablaze during their rampage on Friday. He, however,
said nobody had been arrested by the police over the unfortunate development,
but confirmed that the command had begun full investigation into the matter.

Revenge mission

The youth, according to eye witnesses, killed five persons,
razed four buildings, and kidnapped Mr. Oyegbemi. Mr. Adeniran, who confirmed
the incident, however, said only two lives were lost while the palace of the
monarch and two other houses were torched.

The police spokesman explained that the Ijaw youth were probably
on a revenge mission following the discovery of the body of an ex-militant in
Iju-Osun, on Thursday.

He explained that the people of Iju-Osun could not account for the death of
the ex-militant, hence the invasion of the town by the irate Ijaw youth.
