The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday, refuted the allegation against it that it is engaged in buying voters’ cards in order to manipulate the forthcoming general elections. It also noted that the unfounded allegation was perpetrated by some politicians who are bent on denting the image of the party.
According to a release by the National Publicity Secretary, Rufai Ahmed Alkali, “We wonder how a party as large as ours and with a nationwide support base will engage in buying of voters’ cards when Nigerians in their millions are pledging their support for us on a daily basis. We view these allegations as idle talk without any basis or foundation. It is indeed a ploy by some elements to concoct excuses for their inevitable failure at the polls,” it read.
The statement therefore called on its supporters to ignore such diversionary stories and continue to mobilise the electorate in order to achieve total victory at all levels in the forthcoming elections. Meanwhile, PDP has named Emeka Nwankpa, former Abuja Bureau Chief of the Guardian Newspaper, as the Special Assistant (Media) to Bello Haliru Mohammed, the Acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
His appointment, which was contained in a letter issued at the weekend by the National Secretary of the party, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, takes effect from 21st January, 2011. According to the release made available to NEXT yesterday, the appointment is said to be part of the moves by the party’s leadership to strengthen its machinery and capacity to achieve maximum publicity in the media.
