Notable leaders
from Akure, capital of Ondo State, yesterday met to chart ways of
bringing meaningful development to the ancient city. At a summit
organised by the Akure Divisional Consultative Forum, leaders of the
town stressed the need for unity in the effort to transform the city.
The convener of the
meeting, Olu Aboluwoye noted that despite the fact that Akure community
had produced important people in the society; the town has not
witnessed commensurate development in recent times He said there was
the need to galvanise human resources to advance the socio-political
development of the area. Mr. Aboluwoye who is a visiting lecturer at
the Federal University of Technology Akure, said most of the past
leaders of Akure Kingdom were self-centred and selfish.
The university don
said the summit was organised to provide and promote sound basic
training reflecting indigenous culture and unity.
His words, “Today,
Akure division is lagging behind due to the impossible leaders we have
among us. We should not fold our arms and allow selfish leaders to
debar the growth of Akure”.
Mr Aboluwoye
commended leaders like former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, Olusola
Saraki, Bayo Akinlola, the late Adebayo Adefarati and former governor
of the state, Olusegun Agagu, for bringing rapid development to their
various communities. He also urged traditional rulers in Akure division
to forget the past and come together to re-structure and re-build the
Communities.
Another community leader, Michael Akintade, stressed the need for
politicians in Akure to work assiduously for the development of the
community.
