The show is over. This year’s 83rd Academy Awards broadcasted from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles strike a balance.
Youngest hosts in Oscar’s history Anne Hathaway and John Franco witnessed trembling, laughter and tears.
‘And the Oscars goes to…’
It is likely to be the most significant sentence in an actor’s life. Colin Firth is now queuing in Hollywood’s hall of fame. Winning his first award for best actors scoring off Jeff Bridges and Javier Bardem, Firth the star of the epos “The King’s Speech” is presumably to become the next big hit in the dream factory.
Firth that was already hotly tipped prior to the awards, beside fellow actors Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo – became winner of the night.
Leading role of the evening took Tom Harper’s historical drama with Firth as stuttering King George VI and his therapist Lionel Logue to score four of the desired trophies. Winning Oscars in the most important category for ‘best film’ and ‘best director’, the movie also won in ‘best picture’.
Natalie Portman received a price as ‘best actress’ for her dazzling performance as schizophrenic ballerina in Black Swan. “It’s unbelievable” the 29 year old yelled into the cameras as Portman won out over Nicole Kidman and Annette Bening for her first Oscar ever.
Trophies for actor and actress in supporting role went to Christian Bale and Melissa Leo for their outstanding role in the drama “The Fighter”, in which they characterize an ageing drug-addicted boxer and his mother.
It’s also the first Oscar for 37-year-old Bale, a performer most people should be familiar with as Bruce Wayne in Batman.
David Fincher’s “The Social Network”, that had abandoned the field to Tom Harper’s “Speech”, received an Academy Award for best ‘adapted screenplay’ written by Aaron Sorkin. While “Toy Story 3” won an Oscar for best ‘animated feature film’, the Danish production “In a Better World” by Susanne Bier scored an award for best ‘foreign-language-film’.
“Inside Job” that takes a closer look at what brought about the financial meltdown with Matt Damon as starring role obtained a prize for best ‘documentary feature’. Christopher Nolan’s thriller “Inception” gained four awards in categories best ‘cinematography’, best ‘sound editing’ and scored with best ‘sound mixing’ and best ‘visual effects’.
