Absa Premiership leaders Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town have the chance to put daylight between themselves and the rest of the chasing pack when they play key midweek fixtures on Wednesday.
With third-placed Kaizer Chiefs having missed out on the chance to go top of the log last night when they were held to a goalless draw away to Vasco da Gama, Bucs and/or the Urban Warriors can open up a four-point buffer at the head of the standings.
Pirates have the easier fixture of the two leaders, as they are home to 14th-placed Maritzburg United. However, United are desperately trying to move clear from the relegation zone and will not be an easy prospect for the Soweto giants.
Ajax play away to Bidvest Wits in the afternoon, a tough assignment for the Cape team, as Wits have been in great form in recent weeks, though their momentum was halted somewhat this weekend when they were soundly beaten by Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sundowns themselves are not out of the title race but they will need to make the most of their away game against relegation-threatened Black Aces to keep up their outside hopes.
Another key clash this evening sees SuperSport United host Moroka Swallows. The former team need a win to ensure that they steer clear of the relegation battle, while the latter are in the fight of their lives to try and avoid the dreaded drop, so its a game in which tensions should run high.
Other clashes during the afternoon/evening see Free State Stars host AmaZulu, and MTN-sponsored teams Golden Arrows and Bloemfontein Celtic are at home to Platinum Stars and away to Santos respectively.
