The Beginning
Dat Man, real name Ayo Ogunlade,
started out as a chorister in church and shortly after, discovered he
was good in various aspects of music such as vocalisation, arrangement
and song writing. Dat Man wrote his first song in 1996 and has not
looked back ever since.
Although he only began music
professionally two years ago, the artist honed his skills while working
with a number of upcoming artists and helping out with music
production. Dat Man was also a member of a group called Tagzone which
comprises of 3 artists. The group released a number of songs and also
shot a video. Although he is no longer an active member of the band, he
says ‘We are still together now because they really gave me the push to
release an album. I featured some of them in my forthcoming album. In
one of the tracks in my forthcoming album, I collaborated with Talking
Drum, one of the artists in the group. In the near future, I hope to do
something with other established artists in the music industry’ he said.
According to the soft spoken artist,
he was majorly the Reggae artist of the band. Speaking on why he joined
the band, he said ‘When one is starting, it is good to get involved in
a group.
The Future
As he works towards releasing his
debut 12 track album in June, Dat Man who at some point worked in a
food processing company reveals that his music consciously fues RB
and Hip-Hop. “Most of the songs are personal experiences. They are
things that happen or have happened and what we see in our society.
When it (his album) is released you will understand what I am talking
about,” he said.
The University of Ibadan, Food
Technology graduate currently has two singles ‘She Minikan’ and ‘Front
Page Girl’ on air. ‘She MiNiKan’, has a heavy influence of soul with a
subtle Reggae feel, it also has a generous amount of Yoruba quips and
wise sayings.
‘Front Page Girl’ is somewhat lame and
does not have deep intelligent lyrics with the singer sounding nasal
for the better part of the song. On the other hand it is laced with a
lot of Hip Hop beats that may succeed in getting the listener up on his
or her feet.
