The Oyo State governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, has accused his
predecessor, Rashidi Ladoja, of using the state’s resources to cater for his
immediate family members and relations at the expense of the people of the
state when he was the governor.
Mr Alao-Akala, who was Mr Ladoja’s deputy from 2003 to 2007,
alleged at the weekend that he was privy to his former boss’s penchant for
taking care of the needs of his ‘‘people” before thinking of what to do for
the state and its dwellers. Describing Mr. Ladoja, the governorship candidate
of the Accord Party for the 2011 election, as an inconsistent and unreliable
politician, Mr. Alao-Akala, told his audience at Igbeti, in the Oke Ogun area
of the state, that his own administration had done well in spreading the
booties of the state across all regions since its inception in 2007.
However in a reaction made available to journalists at the
weekend, the campaign organisation of Ladoja took exception to the allegation,
calling Alao-Akala ‘‘a defiant in a civil society”. Adeolu Adeleke, former
speaker of the state’s House of Assembly and Director-General of Ladoja
Campaign Organisation, said the state governor is a aberration to civil
politics. “Akala has forgotten the time he was rejected by his people but Ladoja
picked him up from his frustration and made him sit with important people,” he
said, adding that the “governance is for a time and their tenure will soon
expire, and they will come back to their old home”.
While speaking in Igbeti where he went for a campaign, Mr
Alao-Akala gave his administration a pass mark in area of infrastructural
provision and development, particularly roads rehabilitation.

He promised to upgrade and expand the Igbeti General Hospital
and deploy more medical doctors to the town. “As deputy, my oga (Ladoja) was
just giving money to his family and relations to the detriment of the suffering
masses of the state. That is condemnable and unacceptable. Since our
administration, we have been spreading the state resources to everybody, and
you people of Oke Ogun can testify to this. When my oga was there, how much of
your roads did he reconstruct? When you people travel, you were always covered
with dust because of the bad roads. Now you can travel with ease with your
clothes intact because we have tarred almost all the roads leading your towns
to Oyo and Ibadan,” he said.
The governor said he relied on merit votes rather than
thugs-induced violence to win his re-election next month. He also denied
allegation that he was going to mobilise thugs to rig the next governorship
election on his behalf.
He pledged his commitment to the one-man one-vote principle of Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Igboho, one of the Oke-Ogun towns he
visited. “This is what makes us happy and we rely solely on merit votes. People
who had come before us can see that they were unable to do as much as we have
done. Anywhere we go, people are not asking us what we have done because they
are able to see what we have done,” he said. “We believe in free, fair and
credible elections, our achievements will speak for us, we don’t need to
campaign, we have been able to achieve our 13 point agenda since inception of
this administration. We established hospitals and health centers in all the 33
local government in the state.”
