Thousands of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in
Ondo State at the weekend defected to the ruling Labour Party, claiming the
successes of the state government as their reason.
Leading the defectors is a former past commissioner for special
duties in the state, Boye Adegbemisoye.
Mr. Adegbemisoye, a former chairman of the Ile-Oluji/ Okeigbo
local government council, would be the fourth cabinet ranking official of the
past Olusegun Agagu administration to dump their former boss.
He told the gathering at Ile-Oluji, headquarters of the council,
that the Labour Party administration of Olusegun Mimiko has impacted positively
on the lives of the people, to his surprise.
“The Mimiko-led government has constructed 8-kilometres of road
in Ile-Oluji in the last two years, more than the Agagu administration under
which I served for about 6 years,” he said, adding that his town has also
benefitted from the construction of ‘caring heart’ mega primary schools across
the state.
He noted the present government has acceded to the age-long
desire of the community for a sports stadium, which he said would boost sports
development in the local government and its environ.
He added that all his supporters had decided to work tirelessly
for the victory of the party in the April election.
While receiving the new decampees into Labour Party, the southern
senatorial chairman of the party, Omololu Meroyi, thanked Mr. Adegbemisoye for
his courage and determination to join Labour Party, to ensure its success in
the forthcoming elections.
Equal opportunities
He assured him and his followers of equal opportunities in the
Labour Party, asking him to sustain the unity and peace within the party.
Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who described the local government as
the stronghold of Labour Party, called on indigenes of the area to utilise the
opportunity to advance the development of the area.
“This local government is special to Labour Party and we shall do
everything possible to make you happy. Let us have unity. When we have peace
and unity, everything you want shall be made possible. You voted massively for
us when things were very hard. Let us work together in unity,” he said.
