At least 142
graduates of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). Ile-Ife, had first
class degrees in the university in the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 academic
sessions.
The chairman of the
university’s ceremonials committee, Akinola Aguda, who disclosed this
at a pre-convocation press conference, stated that 6,862 graduates will
bag the degrees of the university at the 38th convocation ceremony of
the university which kicks off on Wednesday, 9th March, 2011.
Mr Aguda disclosed
that 3,595 of the graduates belong to the 2008/2009 academic session
while 3,267 graduated in the 2009/2010 session.
As part of activities for the convocation, four distinguished Nigerians will be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.
The honorees are
Justice Bola Babalakin, a retired Judge of the Supreme Court, Folake
Solanke, the first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ngozi Okonjo
Iweala, former Minister of Finance and Jimoh Ibrahim, the Chairman of
Global Fleet.
Mr. Aguda said the
decision to confer the honorary degrees on them was as a result of
exemplary attributes they displayed in their chosen professions and
their immense contributions to the growth and development of the
country.
He also said the
Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Professor Oladapo Afolabi will
deliver a convocation lecture titiled “Good Governace and National
Development: The strategic Roles of University” at the ceremony.
During the
convocation ceremony, the university will also commission some projects
executed by its management under the leadership of the Vice-
chancellor, Michael Faborode, whose tenure expires in June this year.
The projects to be commissioned include Lecture theatres, roads and a dam among others.
