An Osogbo
Magistrate Court yesterday remanded two suspected political thugs at
the Federal Prison, Ile-Ife, who allegedly disturbed the campaign of
Goodluck Jonathan, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential
candidate, at Osogbo City Stadium last Thursday.
The two accused
persons, Olalekan Ayo (25) and Anthony Eyitemi (28), were alleged to
have armed themselves with cutlasses, axes, and pump action riffle at
the venue of the presidential rally in Osogbo, Osun State capital, and
engaged themselves in a free-for-all fight.
The prosecutor, Mr.
Michael Ubi, alleged that the accused persons used the cutlasses and
axes against each other while disturbing public peace at the venue of
the rally. He told the court that the accused persons were found with a
riffle number R199873 at the venue of the rally.
The offence, which
was said to have been committed at about 3pm at Osogbo City Stadium,
according to the prosecution, was contrary to section 516A of the
criminal code, cap 34, vol 11 laws of Osun State, Nigeria. The accused
persons pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them.
Pleading for bail
on their behalf, the defence counsel, Mr. Ezekiel Ogunjuyigbe, urged
the court to grant them bail, saying that the offence was bailable and
that they would provide reliable sureties who would stand for them if
granted bail.
In his ruling, the
presiding Magistrate, Mr. Olalekan Ijiyode, ordered that the two
accused persons be remanded in prison custody pending the date of
adjournment. The case was thus adjourned till April 1, 2011 for mention.
