Police
authorities in Bauchi state have confirmed that three persons were
yesterday killed in an attack in Tafawa Balewa local government area of
the state.

The police
commissioner, Abdulkadir Indabawa, said the three dead bodies recovered
by the police were burnt beyond recognition while six houses were
totally burnt to ashes in the violence that sent many of the
inhabitants fleeing the town. It would be recalled that an
ethno-religious crisis erupted in the Tafawa Balewa local government
area on January 27, this year as a result of which the state governor,
Isa Yuguda threatened to relocate the people in the area if the
violence rec ur.

The Tafawa Balewa
crisis, the second in two months, is coming at a time when the
committee set up by the state government under the chairmanship of
retired general Yakubu Usman to investigate matters connected to the
last crisis is still working on its assignment.

According to
Corporal Indabawa, who was at the scene of the violence which broke out
in the early hours of yesterday morning said unknown persons attacked
the inhabitants of the area. He, however, said that adequate security
personnel have been deployed to the area to protect lives and
properties of the people, and that normalcy has since returned to the
crisis-ridden area.

He explained that
the attackers have gone back and left the place through the railway
route in Tafawa Balewa when the security pursued them. “We suspected
that the dead bodies were causalities from the attackers’ side because
we have checked, no one lost his life in the attacks”, Mr.Indabawa said.

Though the Police
Commissioner said he could not confirm the burning of some villages
such as Gital and its surroundings, sources from the area said that
seven wards of Gital village were burnt down. He said in a telephone
interview, “Presently we are in Tafawa Balewa, we didn’t reach Gital
because I don’t want to talk on what I didn’t see; you should wait
until I visit the area.”

Mr. Indabawa further explained that though the situation is under
control and the attackers forced back, no arrest was made due to the
terrain of the area.
