Following Tuesday’s violent clash in Ose Local Government Area of
Ondo State, the State Police Command has summoned the leadership of the Action
Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the ruling Labour Party (LP) to an emergency
meeting.
At least 10 people sustained series of injuries in the clash that
forced residents of Imeri to run for safety.
One person was reportedly shot dead through a stray bullet from
yet to be identified hoodlums, said to be sponsored by one of the political
parties.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Adeniran Aremu in a
statement issued yesterday, said the emergency meeting became necessary because
of the prevalent cases of attacks on political parties in the state. “As
police, we are ready to ensure the forthcoming elections are hitch free. We are
not going to tolerate any breakdown of law and order from any political
parties. We will deal ruthlessly with any leader of any political party that
fails to caution their supporters.” Mr Aremu warned.
ACN Appeals to Inspector
General
Meanwhile, the ACN has appealed to the Inspector General of
Police (IGP), Hafiz Ringim to pay attention to security in the state as the
general elections draw nearer.
The state Chairman of the party, Jumoke Anifowose in an interview
with reporters at the party’s secretariat in Akure, said the attacks on the ACN
members and properties were becoming unbearable.
She cited the invasion of the party’s secretariat at Idanre,
where LP’s hoodlums allegedly attacked ACN members. She also mentioned the
attack at Ajowa where the ACN’s banners were removed and the party secretariat
destroyed. Mrs Anifowose cited several other alleged attacks on the ACN and its
members in the state.
“We don’t know how to curtail the violence; the LP’s government
knows we don’t have police protection and its party’s members have been
intimidating us.
“We want the ruling party to know that democracy is not for
violence, candidates should be allowed to sell their programmes to electorate
without being molested.” Mrs Anifowose said.
