Burkina Faso keen to extend their lead

24 March 2011

We will bring you live coverage of all the goals as they go in around the continent on both Saturday and Sunday!

– Burkina Faso v Namibia, 26th March, Ouagadougou

When Burkina Faso and Namibia take the field to wage war, in only their second qualifying match of Group F, it will be their first ever international meeting. Never before have the two sides locked horns on the football field and an exciting match is expected.

There is only one match in this group of three as Gambia play no one in this round of the qualifying group.

At present Burkina Faso top Group F after only playing one match, that game a 3-1 win over Gambia. Namibia currently props up this group of three, also only after playing one match, but losing it 3-1 to Gambia.

Burkina Faso will be looking to keep their undefeated record enacted and stay atop of the group and keep themselves in with a good shout of qualifying for the 2012 African Cup of Nations.

Namibia, on the other hand, will be desperate for their first win and a chance to possibly jump to the top of the group provided they win by three goals or more, but playing away from home that will prove a tough task.

In terms of class, according to the FIFA World rankings 100 places separate Burkina Faso (40th) and Namibia (140th). So for Namibia to walk away with the three points would be a major upset, but anything can happen in Africa.

In terms of recent results neither side have been very impressive. Burkina Faso last played an international friendly match on the ninth February 2011 against Cape Verde. It was not a good day for them as they lost 1-0. Prior to that game the only other match they played following their first African Cup of Nations qualifier was 2-1 win over Guinea in November 2010.

Namibia have not fared much better having played three games since their last qualifier, losing two of them and drawing the other. Their recent results have seen them draw 1-1 with Botswana (16th February 2011); lose to Malawi 2-1 (9th February 2011); and a 2-0 loss to India 2-0 (15th September 2010).
