Residents of
Ogwu-Aniocha, a remote community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of
Anambra State will now enjoy electricity for the first time following
the commissioning of a N30m rural electrification project by the
Anambra State government.

Commissioner for
public utilities, water resources and community development, Emeka
Nwankwu, said the project was in line with the state government’s
policy of simultaneous multi-sectoral development under the Anambra
State Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS).

Mr Nwankwu, who
noted that rural electrification had been a priority area of the state
government, said over 177 transformers were procured between 2009 and
2010 and they have been distributed to the various communities.
“Emphasis was placed on poor remote communities with difficult
terrains,” Mr Nwankwu stated. He enjoined the community to adequately
protect the project from vandals to avoid wastage of government’s
resources.

Community’s response

The community,
speaking through its town union president, Innocent Udom thanked the
state governor, Peter Obi, for extending governance to the community.
He said this is the first time in the history of the area that a
serving governor is visiting.

They also commended
the governor on the provision of the transformer to their community, as
well as construction of a model five-classroom block, a water borehole,
a primary healthcare centre and the electricity project.

“We, however,
plead with the governor to construct the major road in the town to
boost agricultural produce and to rehabilitate the only secondary
school in the town,” Mr Udom said. “Government should also convert the
lake in this area into a tourist attraction. Mr Obi expressed
satisfaction that his all round development of the state is yielding
fruit.

More teachers for the state

The State
government has also released a list of 2000 teachers who were
successful in the interviews recently conducted by both Anambra State
Universal Basic Education Board and Post Primary Schools Service
Commission.

A release from the
state government yesterday said the prospective teachers will teachers
will be posted to their communities of origin.

Before last year’s governorship election in the state, the state
government had come under criticism from the opposition that it was
using the issue of recruitment to campaign for votes.
