Black Stars set for Wembley

29 March 2011

MTNFootball.com will bring you live Play-by-Play coverage of the International Friendlies between England vs Ghana (Tuesday, 29 March. Kick-off 21:00) as well as Nigeria v Kenya (Tuesday, 29 March. Kick-off 19:00.

Ghana will face England for the first time at senior level at Wembley Stadium in London tonight. The Black Stars come into the game full of confidence after an easy 3-0 win over Congo in a continental qualifier on the weekend.

However, they will not be facing a full-strength Three Lions team, as coach Fabio Capello has opted to release the likes of Wayne Rooney, John Terry and Frank Lampard from the squad after a comfortable 2-0 win over Wales in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Saturday.

Nonetheless, claiming a win at Wembley would be a famous moment in Ghanas history and captain John Mensah who plays his club football with Sunderland hopes his side can become the first African side to beat England, even if the hosts’ team will be a watered-down version.

Mensah said: “This is the first time we are going to play against England so it is very important to us.

“I’m not too worried about those not playing because anyone who plays for England are capable of doing the job. Maybe the fans would prefer to see people like Wayne Rooney but I don’t think those that are playing are not good. I know that if they have the national jersey, they are good players.

“It is going to be an historic match because if we win against England, we make history and we want to do that. We do not under-rate England – whoever plays for them.”

Other friendlies involving African teams tonight see Tunisia playing Oman in Muscat; Equatorial Guinea host Gambia in Malabo; Gabon face Cameroon in La Courneuve (just outside of Paris); and Nigeria host Kenya in Abuja.

On Wednesday, Botswana will celebrate their qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with a friendly in Marrakech against Morocco.
