The Player
Oladapo Ajayi is a Management Information Systems
graduate from Covenant University. Lada, as he now wishes to be called, is a
gospel singer and rap artist; a style he describes as ‘alternative rap’ because
“I don’t conform to any of the traditional stereotypes of rap such as gangster,
hardcore or party rap”.
The history
Lada’s love for music dates back to his childhood
days. He said, “I loved jamming and performing Majek Fasek’s songs especially
‘Send Down The Rain’, at about that same time, I began drumming and singing
around the house”. As a teenager, Lada joined his church choir and in 1998,
while still in secondary school, he formed a quartet with his friends called
Boys in Christ (BIC). The group later transformed into Exodus 4 in 2000. The
group went on to represent his school at events. During his day at the Covenant
University, Lada decided to put more attention to his poems and only performed
at his 300 level. In 2008, he worked with producer, Dr. Frabz, who helped with
the release of his first single, ‘Aada’.
The inspiration
Lada gets inspired by things around him. “It can
be world news or something that has happened to me personally or to someone
else or just from my imagination.” His musical influences varies from Nigerians
including Sir Shina Peters, Ebenezer obey, Sound Sultan, Tuface, Eldee, and
some international artist including 2Pac, Nas, and Lupe Fiasco.
The music
His debut single ‘I Believe (Aada)’ is dedicated
to Nigeria. He delivers his line with a combination of English and Yoruba languages.
The track also has clean rap lines with dance provoking beats. His other single
‘Passport’ is also a dedication to Nigerians and is delivered on a low tempo
beat. On this track he sings his love for Nigeria, and that he is proud to hold
a Nigerian passport. With his delivery and use of words, Lada has what it takes
to make the A list in the industry.
