Peter Yohanna Usafa, the Chairman of Bwari Area Council in
the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), speaks on why the area council experienced
voters’ apathy in the Saturday’s National Assembly election. Excerpt:

Assessment of National
Assembly election

The turnout was lower than that of the election that was
postponed, but it was well organised and I feel it was a fair election because
people were calm and the whole situation was calm too.

Individuals, who are law-abiding citizens, came out to elect
credible leaders who can deliver dividends of democracy. And I feel with this,
we will be having one of the best elections within the country.

Cause of low turnout

Two factors militated against it. One is that people felt even
if they came out to vote, as it was the case last week, the election may still
be cancelled. Secondly, the bomb blast at Suleja scared voters from going to
vote.

Insecurity during
elections

The police are doing their best. But when destiny beckons on
you, there is nothing you can do. All you see happening today, most of them are
destined.

If God says this is how you are going to die, no man changes it,
even the generals in the army cannot, the IG of police cannot and the president
who is the commander-in-chief of armed forces cannot. The only thing is that we
should learn to appreciate one another. Election is not a period of crisis; It
is a period to elect a leader that we will be proud of and I feel we should
know that even if we kill ourselves, a leader will still emerge. It is better
we treat ourselves well and let the brotherly love continues.

Presidential poll

I urge our people to come out en masse next week to elect a
credible president who will provide security so that our lives and property can
be safe; someone who can provide infrastructure for the citizens of Nigeria so
that Nigeria can be developed. With this, if we come out en masse next week to
elect a credible candidate. I am sure we are going to experience dividends of
democracy.

Chances of his party

My party is not supposed to slug it out with any other parties
because we have done our best. David Mark is a PDP member and he is controlling
the Senate well, likewise others too. So, PDP as far as I am concerned, the
rating of performance is high, so most of them should be able to come back. I
feel I have done a lot but there is no way you can rate yourselves. But let me
tell you, whatever you do, posterity will judge you.
