The governorship
candidacy of Gboyega Isiaka of the People’s Party of Nigeria, (PPN) has
received a boost, as the Yoruba group, Afenifere, yesterday endorsed
him.
The group through
two of its leaders, Ayo Adebanjo and Onalapo Soleye, made this known in
Abeokuta in the presence of two other leading Afenifere elders, Ayo
Fasoranti and Lanihun Ajayi.
The group urged
all true Afenifere and the people of Ogun State to vote for all the
candidates of the PPN in the elections of Tuesday April 26, 2011.
They explained
that this became necessary because of the party’s link with the state
governor, Gbenga Daniel whom they described as a committed Awoist and a
major stakeholder in Afenifere, pointing out that it was fit and proper
for the people of Ogun State to support Mr Isiaka in ensuring that the
gains of the past eight years are consolidated through a worthy
successor.
Like Awolowo
Mr Soleye, former
Finance Minster said Mr Daniel like the late Awolowo came ahead of his
time and has succeeded in changing Ogun State through all round
developmental strategy. He said because of the giant strides and
verifiable economic development engendered in the last eight years, it
has become incumbent for people of Ogun State to go with Mr Daniel in
the unfolding political dispensation.
He said a vote for
Mr Isiaka and the PPN would be a vote against politics of egocentrism,
greed and bitterness. Responding, Mr Isiaka said he was humbled by the
support of major stakeholders and promised not to disappoint the people
of Ogun State. He said having worked with Mr Daniel for more than seven
years, it would be easy for him to consolidate the gains of the
governor’s era for the benefit of the people.
