Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, has charged the state’s
workers to join in the agitation for increment in the revenue allocation to the
state by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
Mr Fayemi who was addressing the state workforce during the 2011
Workers’ Day held at the Christ School Sports’ ground in Ado Ekiti Sunday, said
increased revenue was the only way the state could meet the N18,000 minimum
wage being demanded by Ekiti State workers. “Labour should join forces for the
increased revenue to this state the way you did during the advocacy for one
man, one vote. You cannot afford to be silent on this issue because that is the
only way the N18,000 minimum wage being demanded by workers can be made
realisable.” He said.
The governor was
responding to the speeches delivered separately by the leadership of the
Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, Ojo Arogundade and Kola
Olaiya respectively. Mr Fayemi commended the workers for their hard work and
resilience. He promised to maintain a cordial relationship with the workers,
saying that his government has since restored the suspended housing and vehicle
loans to workers as a way of improving their well-being.
The former governor of the state, Segun Oni had suspended the
two loan schemes while in office. Mr Fayemi also refuted the allegation that
his administration recently sacked some workers for voting against the Action
Congress of Nigeria (ACN) during the just-concluded polls.
New pay for workers
Mr Fayemi disclosed that the state government would commence the
payment of N13,000 relativity salary to workers in Ekiti from May 1, just as he
has approved the Consolidated Medical and Health Salary Scales demanded by
medical workers in the state.
The governor also promised to tackle the epileptic power supply
in the state through an independent power project to enhance economic growth.
He said the state government had purchased and distributed some transformers to
parts of the state to boost electricity generation and the redistribution of
power from the just-completed 132/133kva power project in Ado Ekiti to other
towns and villages.
