Following his victory at the governorship polls, Kaduna State
governor, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, may soon dissolve the state executive
council, which was inaugurated three months after he was sworn in as the
executive governor of the state last year.
A government house source told NEXT that the governor, though he
has been declared winner of the April 28 gubernatorial election, is not happy
with the poor performance of many of his commissioners, special advisers and
other top aides who could not deliver their areas to the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP), coupled with the allegation that some of them worked against his
re-election because of personal interests.
Mr Yakowa was the first elected governor of the state from the
southern part. He was sworn in as governor last year following the elevation of
the former governor Namadi Sambo to the vice presidency last year. His
reelection bid had faced a slew of opposition, especially from the northern part
of the state.
The source further disclosed that the council dissolution would
take place in the weeks before May 29, in order for Mr Yakowa to compensate
those that worked tirelessly for his victory at the polls. Already, both
serving commissioners have started lobbying to retain their positions and
others looking for fresh appointments.
Several political office seekers are said to be reaching out to
prominent religious and traditional rulers who are close to Mr Yakowa, for them
to be considered in the new cabinet.
Choosing right
The source also disclosed that having inherited some of his
aides from Mr Sambo, who allegedly imposed them on him, the governor is
determined to assemble good hands to form his cabinet so as to fulfill his
campaign promises to the people.
“Most of the commissioners that worked with the governor from
last year were not sound, but had to be appointed because of external forces.
But this time, his excellency is not going to take anyhow person no matter
where he or she is coming from. The governor is very eager to give the people
dividends of democracy and he needs sound brains to assist him,” the source
said.
The governor, who, shortly after his victory, assured that he would carry
everybody along, is reportedly going to run a united government like his former
boss, Mr Sambo. He is said to be lobbying members of the strong opposition
parties to drop their gloves and join his government. If he succeeds, the
source said, the governor will concede some commissioner slots to the opposition.
