Contrary to
speculations that the appointment of David Tsevende as the acting
chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) was
to settle political scores, the acting chairman has said his
appointment was to bring back the lost glory of the board.
Speaking yesterday
with NEXT in his office, Mr Tsevende who was only seven days old in
office revealed that for the better performance of the board, two of
its directors who, according to him, were stumbling blocks to the board
had been removed and more capable hands had replaced them. The affected
directors were in charge of Junior Secondary School and Welfare
respectively. He explained that the move was to inject new blood in the
system.
No child labour
Mr Tsevende
informed that there were teachers who had involved themselves in
partisan politics in the last general elections. According to him those
who went partisan would not be spared in line with the civil service
rules. He informed that he had directed that names of those involved be
brought before him for punitive measures.
Mr Tsevende stated
that no primary school pupil in the state will be used for child labour
by teachers as was the case especially in villages. He disclosed that
the Benue State government had released about N1.8 billion as
counterpart fund to enable the board access funds from UBEC for
infrastructural development in the elementary schools in the state.
