In order to address
the epileptic power supply in some communities of Ondo State, the Niger
Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has awarded the contract for the
construction of a N6 billion sub-power station of the Power Holding
Company of Nigeria (PHCN) at Okitipupa area of the state.
The commission also
awarded the contract for the construction of modern bore-holes at the
cost of N700m in oil producing communities in the area.
The state’s
representative on the governing board of NDDC, Benson Enikuomehin who
disclosed this while speaking with reporters in Akure yesterday, said
the modern bore-holes would be sunk in selected towns to tackle the
problems of non-availability of potable water.
“The PHCN sub power
station project, which is to be sited in Okitipupa, will commence
before the end of June 2011, while the water projects are on-going in
their respective locations,” he said.
“The projects
became very important because of the economic value of the people in
the area and their contribution to national development”
Some of the
benefiting communities of the water projects are Ugbonla, Odonla,
Yonren, Igbokoda, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Oke-Igbo, Aule in
Akure, Oke-Agbe, Iju and Mobolorundoro in Ondo East Local government.
He stated further
that the Oberebiminu, Oberewoye, Awoye and Ojumole water projects have
been completed and are now functioning effectively.
“It is ironic that
the people who live on water could not have access to drinkable water
in spite of their enormous contribution to the nation’s economy,” he
said.
The NDDC Chief
hinted that new road contracts worth 3.5billion have also been awarded
by the commission in different parts of the state.
The road projects
include Kiribo Intra-city roads, Igbokoda township roads, Urereara
road, Ajagba/Kiribo road, one kilometre road project at Igodan Lisa new
site, Okitipupa road, Mahin township roads and construction of roads in
Ondo, Ifon and Iju in Akure North local government.
Mr Enikuomehin said the projects were fulfilment of the commission’s
commitment to better the lot of the people in the oil producing
communities.
