A director in the Akwa Ibom governor’s office, Mr. Bassey Udoemah was yesterday shot dead by unknown gunmen believed to armed robbers.
An eyewitness account said that Mr. Udoemah was trailed from a bank where he had gone to withdrawal money to his official car before he was shot.
The armed robbers were said to have stopped him at Ibiam street opposite the University of Uyo Town campus and shot him several times before escaping with the cash in his car.
Confirming the incident, the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Onyeka Orji, said the police were intensifying investigations in order to arrest the culprits.
At press time, he said no arrest has been made, but he urged members of the public to offer the police useful information that could help the command.
The incidence of armed robbery and assassinations have been on the increase in Akwa Ibom of late, especially in Uyo, the state capital and its environs.
To days ago, Mr. Effiong Asuquo, an aide to the lawmaker representing Uruan state constituency in the state House of Assembly, was robbed and killed in Uyo in a similar fashion.
Asuquo was also said to have gone to a bank to withdraw money, and was trailed by two gunmen on motorcycles.
Witnesses told our correspondent that they eventually caught up with him at a building project site shot him dead and went away with? an unspecified amount of cash.
