The Federal Government on Friday in Abuja ordered the re-opening of the Kaduna Polytechnic and directed the former rector, Alhaji Danjuma Isa, to go on compulsory leave.
Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufai, who gave the directive while addressing newsmen, also announced the dissolution of the Governing Council of the polytechnic.
She said that the council failed to discharge its basic responsibilities in terms of the wellbeing of the institution and appointed an acting rector.

“In order to prevent an interregnum, Alhaji Aminu Aliyu has been appointed as the interim rector for a period of six months within which a substantive rector will be appointed,’’ she said.

President Goodluck Jonathan had on February 18 set up a visitation panel to investigate the lingering crises that caused the closure of the institution. The panel’s mandate was to cover the period between 2004 and 2010.

Following the release of a white paper by the panel, the minister announced the redeployment of the polytechnic’s two deputy rectors to academic departments.
She explained that their transfer was due to complacency during the crises.
Rufa’i also announced the redeployment of the Registrar for not advising the management appropriately on policy issues.

The Minister also directed that the bursar should be relieved of his responsibilities and reassigned to other duties for his failure to render adequate professional advice to management.

“Consequently, the most senior officers would oversee the registry and the bursary departments pending the appointment of substantive officers.’’
She said the polytechnic librarian would remain in office as he had been cleared of all allegations.
The Federal Government further announced the constitution of a financial audit committee to investigate the alleged financial irregularities in the accounting procedures of the institution from 2004 to 2010.

According to the Minister, the committee will propose sanctions against officers found to have erred. (NAN)
