The United States government has lauded the electoral reforms of Nigeria that led to the success recorded during the last general elections.
Briefing reporters after the meeting with Nigerians in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday night, a senior member of the United States government, Hon. Okems Innocent Okemezie said that the electoral reforms had helped the country to checkmate those primordial factors that were clogs in the wheel of its previous attempts on democracy.
Hon. Okemezie, who is the Commissioner for African Commission in the office of the Mayor in Newark, New Jersey State added that with the electoral reforms of President Goodluck
Jonathan, it was no more business as usual in politics even as he stressed that politicians and the political parties would no longer take the electorate for granted with their illicit acts.
He said that it was imperative for Nigerians both home and abroad to support the Jonathan-led government in his agenda to transform the country and noted that the elections in Nigeria marked a new dawn in the history of the country that has positively changed her image positively in the perception of the international community.
Okemezie,who is the founder of Humanity for Africa Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation further noted that Nigeria would surely take its rightful place as the giant of Africa not by mere expression but by actions with the commitment, hard work and determination of the Nigerians in the Diaspora and at home.
He urged Nigerians in Diaspora to help sustain the political equilibrium set by President Jonathan by helping to provide human capital and resources to realise the goals of his administration.
He said “it was evident that before the April 2011 elections he promised to ensure free, fair and credible elections in which every vote would count. I must commend the President for what
I call today the engine of Nigerian democracy, which is the 2010 Electoral Reforms that served as the catalyst for the good job that INEC did for the nation”
Hon Okemezie averred that with the 2011 elections, the President has conveyed a clear vision of Nigeria’s goal to remain a united country and added that he has pursued this goal with passion for the work he is doing to show an ability to make the rest of the country feel committed and energised.
