Rory M.cIlroy is determined to put a smile back on the face of British sports fans
The country’s summer of discontent has seen Andy Murray, David Haye, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton all fall short of greatness. His focus is now firmly on Northern Ireland golfer McIlroy, 22, as he tees off in The Open at Sandwich.
“I’d love to give everyone a reason to smile, especially as I found it as tough as anyone to see Murray and Haye suffer their disappointments. But I already put so much pressure on myself it doesn’t make any difference. Jack Nicklaus told me I had to expect so much from myself that outside forces don’t intrude on what I’m trying to do.”
Tennis ace, Murray lost to Rafa Nadal in the Wimbledon semi-finals, while Haye was outboxed in his world-title fight against Wladimir Klitschko.
Formula One stars Button and Hamilton then failed to make the podium in Sunday’s British Grand Prix.
