Nigeria and the Republic of Germany is to cooperate towards clinching the United Nations top Security Council seats.
Both countries would also cement bilateral relationship that would promote economic and political ties.
High level talks are on between officials of both governments to achieve this goal.
These were part of the discussions held between President of the Senate, Senator David Mark and a delegation of German parliamentarians led by Hartwing Fischer in Abuja n yesterday.
Mark expressed his happiness that Germany and Nigeria were pushing a common course in the interest of their citizens at the UN.
He told his guests that, “Democracy is right on track in Nigeria and we are strengthening and institutionalising all democratic structures and institutions.”
He said the country’s legislators would appreciate an exchange of parliamentary programme especially from older democracies like Germany in order to improve on her legislative functions.
He noted that the last general elections adjudged to be free, fair and credible both locally and internationally had put Nigeria on high pedestal to deliver dividend of democracy to her citizens.
In his remark, the leader of the German parliament, Hartwing Fischer, said the aim of the visit was to cement relationship with Nigeria to achieve mutual cooperation in the areas of economy and energy.
He requested Nigeria’s support towards clinching the UN Security Council seat for his country, assuring that Germany would reciprocate the gesture.
Fischer commended the government and people of Nigeria for the successful conduct of the 2011 general elections, saying that the record had put Nigeria on a very high rating before the international community.
Both German Chancellor, Angella Markel and top parliamentarians from the country were in Nigeria to firm up economic and bilateral relationship with Nigeria.
