Pensioners Demand N16,000 Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners has requested for a minimum monthly pension of N16,000 for its members, saying that they also deserve upward review of their monthly pension income.

The union, in a communique issued at the end of their council meeting held at the Ogun State NUP office in Abeokuta and signed by its state chairman and secretary,? Kessington Odukoya and Bola Lawal respectively, said there had been spiral inflation which did not exclude the pensioners,? adding, ‘’We all buy from the same market, so the federal government should consider the plight of the pensioners and review the? pension to N16,000.00 minimum per month.

Also, the NUP frowned at a situation where, after the biometric exercise in June 2010, the monthly pension become irregular and some pensioners were not properly paid, which led to poverty and premature death of? those affected.

It called on the federal government to decentralise the payment of their monthly pension, saying that a situations where members travel to Abuja to access their pension is very risky and cumbersome.

While calling on the federal government to find a lasting solution to every outstanding monthly pension in order to avert unpleasant action by pensioners throughout the country, they said some pensioners who retired as far back as the year 2000 had not collected their gratuity and monthly pension, and urged the government to consider thefate of such a group.
