Two persons including a student were killed yesterday during a clash between two rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos State.
The clash, which began around 9am, left many commuters coming in from Sango axis of Ogun State stranded as many commercial bus drivers avoided the area.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the operators of small commercial buses known as danfo were trying to resist the attempt of the leadership of the local chapter of the NURTW to take over the control of certain motor parks in the area.
The quest for turf control, led to what looked like an outbreak of violence between the two rival parties. Men were reportedly wielding dangerous weapons such as machetes and broken bottles.
A member of the NURTW who did not want his in print confirmed that the riot erupted because “some of those danfo drivers are trying to prevent us from taking control of the parks.”
A danfo operator, Ibrahim said it was the NURTW members that were making life difficult for both him and his colleagues and their passengers.
The Divisional Police Officer for Alagbado Police Station, Anene Pius, confirmed the incidence. He said his men intervened after receiving distress calls from members of the public.?
