A House of Representatives member from Ekiti State, Hon Bamidele Faparusi, has assured Nigerians that the single tenure of six-years being proposed by President Goodluck Jonathan will not see the light of day if it is designed to give soft landing to the President’s ambition to hold onto power beyond the stipulated time.
He disclosed this in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, while addressing newsmen. He said that the National Assembly would not be pushed into criticising the move until the President sends a bill to that effect to the House.
Faparusi averred that the rationale behind the proposal would be thoroughly deliberated upon even as he said that the bill would die a natural death if it was meant to perpetuate President Jonathan in power against the wish of Nigerians.
“I have heard it as a rumour just like other lawmakers, but I want to assure Nigerians that the intent will be holistically examined and viewed whether it will benefit Nigerians on the long run, but if otherwise, we will surely kill it at the National Assembly,” he said.
The Lawmaker castigated the Security Agencies for radicalising the dreaded Boko Haram sect and pushed them into bombing and maiming of innocent Nigerians through unlawful arrest and extra-judicial killings.
He, however, frowned at the amnesty programme being canvassed by some people for the militant group and said that “Amnesty could only be given to those you can recognise.”
He noted that the amnesty could only work for the group if the leaders were identified by the security agents and noted that amnesty became a potent weapon in resolving the militancy at the Niger Delta Region because “the leaders of the group were known, but in the case of the Boko Haram, their leaders are yet to be identified. ?
