Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State and professional golfers, have commended the Dangote Cement company for sponsoring the just concluded Emir of Kano (Open) Pro-Am golf tournament.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the governor described Dangote Cement company as a partner in the development of the state, adding that his administration would look into the possible areas of intervention to revive the moribund sporting event.
The tournament director and chief executive of PGA Nigeria Tour, Mr. Olusola Lawson said that even though other companies were willing to sponsor the event, they settled for Dangote Cement because of their pedigree and the company’s close association with golf in Nigeria.
“We identified other sponsors in Nigeria but Dangote Cement naturally came top on our list”, he said.
The last tournament was last played on the golf course 21 years ago. The golf course was constructed in 1908, making it the oldest in the country. Five winners got tickets to perform the lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia and 53 professional golfers participated in the tournament that saw Dangote Cement also going home with a trophy for sponsoring the event.
The tournament which consists of professionals and amateurs was held at the Kano Golf Club between July 25 and July 30, 2011.
