The long battle between the Federal Government and Organised Labour may be coming to an end as they are expected to sign an agreement for the implementation of the new wage package today.
Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had threatened to go on strike over government refusal to implement the N18,000 minimum wage across board.
But the plan was suspended after the Federal government caved in to their demands.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP on condition of anonymity, a Labour leader said “the outcome of the round table talk which involved both our members and government is agreeable to us. Hopefully, we are going to sign it tomorrow and every worker will begin to enjoy it from August 31, 2011.”
It is expected that the signing of the agreement between the two parties would put to rest the incessant industrial actions by the Labour movement on the issue of the minimum wage.
It would be recalled that the minister of Labour, Emeka Wogu, after several days of meetings with the organised Labour said that the government was committed to applying the relativity adjustment to all federal workers at all level.
He said, “Federal Government has agreed to comply with the national minimum wage Act of 2011. Federal Government in line with the earlier agreement has concluded the discussion with the two labour bodies, NLC and the TUC on the issue of the minimum wage.
“The detailed negotiation on relativity adjustment with respect to the implementation of the minimum wage has been sorted out and agreed upon.
modalities will be worked out by the joint committee and will be tabled before the national executive councils of NLC and TUC”.
