The Flying Eagles of Nigeria will today take on England in the quarter finals of the World Youth Championship. The Flying Eagles have been impressive so far finishing top of their group with the maximum nine points. Others that achieved same feat are Spain and Colombia. England has not been too impressive so far. They finished their group with just three points and qualified to the quarter final as one of the best losers.
The Flying Eagles are righty considered the favourites to win this tie considering their intimidating goal scoring record. They have so far netted 12 goals in their group matches and conceded just two. They are firing from all cylinders with Ahmed Musa described as the star performer. Musa has three goals to his credit and he is on course for the golden boot alongside fellow Nigerian Olarewanju Kayode. Ahmed Musa also believes this U-20 team is good enough to go past England and far enough to win the World Cup. “We have a great team and after emerging as African champions, we are on target to becoming world champions.”
For Flying Eagles assistant coach, Samuel Abimbola, the trophy is the team’s ultimate goal. “Our target is the trophy. Before we left Nigeria, we called each other together and said, ‘this is the time to get out of poverty.’ And when you fight poverty, you need to fight it with all your strength. I believe that the grace of the Almighty
God will guide and see us through the challenge to win the U-20 World Cup in Colombia. We know that the eyes of other countries are also on the Cup, but we will work harder. But one thing I will like to assure the entire Nigerians is that we are progressing step by step with firm focus on the title. We will always be prepared for any kind of opposition.”
