The police yesterday detonated a bomb at Unguwan Ngas in Yelwa, Bauchi Metropolis said to have been planted near a gutter in the area.
A resident of the area, who pleaded anonymity, said that ‘’ I saw the bomb at about 6.am near the area where local gin is brewed and sold. We were shocked when we saw it and everybody ran away.
He further revealed that an unidentified boy was able to detonate it before a team of anti-bomb squad from the police headquarters arrived the scene and were seen inspecting the object while another batch of policemen barricaded the area, cleared the device and took it away.
Confirming the incident, the The State Commissioner of Police, Bauchi, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba, said that the bomb was a time-bomb made from the compressor of an air-conditioner with all the components of a bomb.
He added that the bomb could have caused maximum damage that could range from one to half kilometre.
The Police chief said that, “It (bomb) was dropped in a gutter in an area people usually gather. I sent our bomb experts who successfully detonated it .”
Aduba described the last three days in the state as ‘tough’ for the command in terms of security challenge.
The commissioner also said that his men were recently attacked twice late last Saturday and Sunday they were undertaking the stop and search when a bomb was hurled into their patrol vehicle.
“Five of our men were injured and were taken to the hospital and have been discharged,” he said.
The commissioner of police said that his command would not be deterred by what was going on and said that he regarded those perpetuating the criminal acts as ‘hoodlums’.
