One nursing mother was killed and two others injured in a protest when soldiers raided one Islamic school at Mandara Abdu ward of Biu town of Biu Local Government of Borno State and arrested five scholars suspected to be members of Boko Haram.
The incident which occurred at about 10:00AM when some women were receiving Ramadan lectures at the Islamiyya school and military men came and arrested their teachers, provoking protest from the students and residents of the area who wanted the scholars to be set free, as they saw no reason for their arrest.
Our correspondent gathered that the protest reached a level when the youths marched to the Biu local government Secretariat and vandalized its windows and door before moving to the EYN church at Jigwal ward and set it ablaze before good samaritans put the fire out.
The protesters who were so angry started throwing stones at the soldiers in their attempt to set the arrested free, when the soldiers responded by firing some shots leading to the death of a nursing mother one Hadiza Mohammed of Zara Wiyaku ward.
When our correspondent contacted the spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Lt. Col. Hassan Mohammed over the incident, he said,” Biu military formation is not under the JTF, it is under the 23rd Armoured Brigade Yola” and referred our correspondent to the Army Public Relations Officer of the Command.
When contacted, Lt. Olumide Olukoya, the Army Public Relations Officer (APRO) confirmed the incident and promised to furnish the Press with more details after conferring with his Commanding Officer.
