When the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) met with the countries security chiefs yesterday, the commission pushed for a review of the security preparations which were put in place during the elections with a view to improving on performance during future elections.
INEC, in the meeting, which was convened under the aegis of the hybrid an Inter-Agency Consultative Committee meeting on Election Security (ICCES), commended Nigeria’s security agencies for the role they played in ensuring the last general elections were credible.
National Commissioner, Dr. Ishmael Igbani, who represented the chairman of the commission, Professor Attahiru Jega at the meeting in Abuja, said that the innovation of involving all security agencies in the country during the polls was the best practice by the Commonwealth and had been endorsed for application in the conduct of future elections among member states.
Igbani said that despite the positive scorecards on the polls, internationally adjudged as largely free and fair, there were marked defects.
Among who attended at the meeting were representatives of the armed forces, police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Immigration Service and the State Security Service.
