Robbers struck in Ilaro and Ifo areas of Yewa South and Ifo local governments of Ogun State, killing an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) and three others.
The robbers, reportedly numbering about 12, came in four vehicles and stole an undisclosed amount of money during the raid of banks at Ilaro before opening fire on a combined police team led by the late ASP.
It was gathered that the robbers stormed Ilaro at noon and embarked on an operation unhindered for one hour.
During the raid, the robbers reportedly unleashed terror on three new generation banks, namely Intercontinental, Wema and Skye bank; and after the incident, two females and a young man were killed while many others allegedly received bullet wounds.
Our source confirmed that the robbers escaped from Ilaro via Abalabi to connect to Ilogbo area in Ifo where they met stiff opposition from the police combat team.
The resultant gun battle led to the death of the senior police officer, simply identified as ASP Peter. The robbers then ran off towards Sango.
It was, however, gathered that the 192 Battalion Army, Owode Yewa, released some of its officers to go after the robbers, as it was earlier speculated that they were escaping through Idogo into the neighbouring Benin Republic.
The state police public relations officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the robbery incident at Ilaro, hinting that the command was on their trail.
