Rivers State Local Government Commission (RSLGC) says it would monitor and evaluate the performance of all principal officers of the local government councils in the state and drop those who fail in their duties without delay.
Chairman of the commission, Chief Azubuike Nmerukini, who stated this in Port Harcourt yesterday, during a meeting with all directors in the 23 local government councils explained that gone is the era when principal officers of the third tier of government failed to report to their respective duty posts.
Nmerukini said the commission would not fail in its effort to maintain sanity in the unified local government service so as to enhance productivity, pointing out that only competent hands would be engaged to lead in the daily administration in the system.
“There is a lot of negative impression being created in the society against the local government set-up based on the wrong perception that the third tier system is corrupt and not needed,” he said.
The chairman, who stressed the need for key players in the local government administration to work as a team to achieve the desired results, also called on operators in the system, especially career staff to always work with the political class to improve the lot of the people at the grassroots.
“The principal officers should adopt the option of dialogue with council chairmen and avoid finding faults or raising memos all the time as a way of resolving problems. If there is no peace in the system, there would be no even development in the rural areas”, he said.
In his speech, secretary of the RSLGSC, Pastor Ransome Westt, said the commission was ready to turn around the local government service in order to serve the rural populace better and called on principal staff of the local government council to cooperate with the commission to succeed.
Earlier, the president of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Rivers State chapter, Barrister Franklin Ajunwo, assured that principal officers of the 23 local government councils in the state would cooperate with the commission to achieve set goals.
