Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed has ordered the immediate relocation of the popular Nyanya Wednesday Market from its present location.
The minister has also ordered the chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), to ensure that the place is reverted to its former use as Motor Park.
Senator Mohammed who gave the directive yesterday at the FCT operations briefing held at Life Camp. He lamented that 80 per cent of traffic congestion on that road could be traced to street hawking, illegal motor parks and the Nyanya Wednesday Market.
According to the minister, the administration had identified 33 black spots being used as illegal Motor Parks in the federal capital city, but assured that officials of the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) had been deployed to enforce the ban; adding that 192 vehicles had so far been impounded from the illegal Motor Parks.
He further stated that the administration had impounded 245 vehicles for various road traffic offences along the Nyanya/Karu road in the last one month that sensitisation operation commenced on the route.
Senator Mohammed further disclosed that during the period, 850 commercial motorcycles and 150 unpainted taxis used for commercial purpose were also impounded just as the administration had also evacuated 576 abandoned, accidented and burnt vehicles from the streets during the same period, including 46 self accidents crashing into street lights within the federal capital city.
He said, “The federal capital city during the period under review recorded 66 road traffic accidents.”
The minister reiterated that the operation will continue until the road is free of all traffic bottlenecks and added that all legal means would be employed to address the ugly traffic problem.
