Board Counsels Residents On Monthly Sanitation

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) yesterday called on the residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the neighbouring satellite towns to ensure they take active part in the August 27, 2011 monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

The call was made by the chairman, stakeholders’ interactive forum on monthly environmental sanitation, Mr.Amos Odunfa yesterday, in Abuja.

He said, “We appeal very strongly to FCT residents to know that the cleaning of our immediate environment is our individual responsibility, in the sense that we are doing that to protect ourselves and our family. If we have the love of our family at heart, we will do everything to make sure the environment is good, safe and habitable for them.

“The world is a global village and any nuisance you create in your own area can also affect other people. So our appeal to residents is to see this exercise as their civic responsibility and come out and at least clean their own immediate environment.”

He warned that the board would not hesitate to sanction any defaulter who fails to comply with the sanitation exercise.

Speaking further on the level of preparedness for the exercise by the board, he said at least 70 per cent of the preparations had been completed.

“We’ve placed adverts in the media to sensitise the residents about the exercise. We have also used other internal mechanism; we use our OB van. We also have the federal information center and they have collaborated with us on this exercise. National Orientation Agency (NOA) has also gone out to sensitise the people,” he added.

Odunfa further stated that the exercise will commence at 7 am till 10 am and stressed that there would be no vehicular or human movement during those hours, except those on essential services or those with passes issued by the AEPB.
