The Sultan of Sokoto , Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged Muslims in the country to look for the new Moon of Shawwal today.
The Sultan stated this in a statement signed by Ahmed Abdulkadir on behalf of the chairman,
Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Abubakar Gwandu.
A copy of the statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday reads in part, “This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that Monday, August 29, 2011 which is equivalent to 29th day of Ramadan, 1432 AH shall be the day to look for the birth of the new moon for the month of shawwal, 1432 AH.
“Muslims are therefore requested to look for the new moon of shawwal on Monday (today) and report its sighting to the nearest district of village head for onward communication to His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto.’’
LEADERSHIP also gathered that, if the new moon of Shawwal is sighted as directed by the Sultan, Eid-el-Fitr would be celebrated tomorrow.
It would be recalled that , Muslims in Nigeria began the ongoing Ramadan fast on August 1.
