Fight broke out at the Appeal Court premises in Sokoto between National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and thugs few hours after they conducted a peaceful protest over the suspension of the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Salami.
Though the casualties recorded during the clash was minimal, two thugs were reportedly manhandled by the NANS members.
Our correspondent, who was at the scene when the argument broke out at noon yesterday, gathered that the peaceful protest organised by NANS, Sokoto State Chapter, in conjunction Zone ‘A’ Act Coordinators of NANS, took a different dimension as the clashed with thugs over a misunderstanding. The thugs were said to have feared that the students would cheat them out of some motivation suspected to be money.
However, the police deployed to the scene to monitor the situation swiftly dispersed the youths to avoid a possible break down of law and order.
Speaking in Sokoto while addressing a crowd of the students who converged at the premises of the Court of Appeal, the Act Co-ordinator of NANS Zone ‘A’, Comrade Isa Jabbi Usman, expressed satisfaction with the removal of Justice Ayo Salami, saying that if the situation was not properly managed, it could be taken advantage of by detractors of the country.
“Ayo Salami must go for peace to reign,” he said.
