IFAA Appoints Nigerian President

The International Federation of Adjusting Associations (IFAA), a global organisation set up to promote the role of loss adjusting associations, their members and the member associations has appointed a Nigerian, Mr. Darlington Mgbojikwe, as its new president.

Mgbojikwe, who is the president of Institute of Loss Adjusters of Nigerian (ILAN), the country’s arm of the international body as well as managing director, Crawford Adjusters would provide leadership in the association for the next twelve months.

Having served in the capacity of second and first vice president of IFAA, he was elected into the number one position of the association at its 2011 yearly general meeting held recently in London. He takes over from Paul May from the United Kingdom.

Mgbojikwe started his insurance career in September 1978, after graduating from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1977 and on completion of the National Youth Service Corps in July 1978.

He started as a graduate superintendent at Unity Life and Fire Insurance Company Limited on September 1, 1978. In January 1980, he was sponsored by the company to the College of Insurance and Risk Management, West African Insurance Institute, Monrovia, Liberia and later returned to Nigeria with a postgraduate diploma in January 1981.

Eager to venture into new and specialised areas of insurance practice, he chose to be an adjuster and started as a trainee at Graham Miller and Company, Lagos where he rose to become the general manager in 1988.

In January 1989, the foreign partners of Graham Miller and Company divested in Nigeria and the indigenous management metamorphosed to the management of a new firm of insurance claims specialists, Messrs Chartered Loss Adjusters Limited, Lagos, Nigeria.

He became the pioneer managing director/chief executive officer in August 1989.

In 1992, the management of Graham Miller and Company, London, UK and Crawford and Company Incorporated, Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America invited Mgbojikwe to a management integration conference.

The celebrated management buy-out and subsequent merger of the two foremost companies in the world made it possible for the emerging firm, Crawford and Company Inc., to emerge as the world’s largest service provider in the fields of claims administration and risks management.

Mgbojikwe in 1995 became a fellow of the Institute of Loss Adjusters of Nigeria (ILAN) and in 2005, a fellow of International Federation of Adjusting Associations (FIFAA).

The objectives of IFAA is to promote the role of loss adjusting associations and their members in creating a positive business environment, forming and influencing public policy, supporting members with appropriate services and to disseminate best practices and increase the professionalism of loss adjusting associations.

FIFAA is currently made of thirteen-member country’s associations including Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, Indian, Malaysia, Nigeria, South Africa, Sri lanka, Illinois, Chile, UK and the U.S.A.
