A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Dr. Okonkwo Nnemeka, has rehabilitated a long abandoned water borehole and has also provided a local water well to Gbessa Community in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
The corps member also donated writing materials and textbooks to Pupils of Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary School Gbessa.
Speaking with newsmen, he said the zeal to meet the needs of the indigenes was borne out of his innate desire to always affect the life of people around him in any little way he could.
He said apart from donating the writing materials to the students and rehabilitating the borehole to provide water for the community, 10 pupils of the school had been selected to be given scholarship for two years. This he said was to create awareness on the importance of education in the community.
Nnaemeka said, “I have always tried my best to impact on people’s lives any where I find myself, and now as a youth corps member, I saw it as an opportunity for me to source for resources to affect the lives of people around me. And the individuals and corporate organisations I approached supported me to get to this level.
Head of school services, FCT Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Catherine Ezeilo, commended the corps member for the gesture, which she said would affect the lives of the pupils positively.
“Other corps members who are able to mobilise in their own way to affect lives should try and do so because there is reward in service that affects lives,” she said.
NYSC zonal inspector, AMAC, Pastor Sunday Adedirin, also commended the corps member for the initiative.
Head of Gbessa Village, Chief Musa Yetu, called on other corps members serving in the community to emulate the gesture to affect the lives of their host community.
